Organic Essence Shea Butter: My favorite Body Cream

It's that time of year where you really start looking around for lotion. At least I do. But a decent body cream, that's truly organic and free of toxic chemicals is not an easy thing to find. Organic Essence is a super eco friendly company (their biodegradable packaging is unheard of) that makes the most luxurious body products that really are good for you and the earth. Their Vanilla Orange Shea Butter Cream completely fits the bill with its comforting smell and yummy texture.

Shea Butter comes from the African Karite Nut and is known for its healing properties. Organic Essence Shea butter (the key ingredient in the cream) is hand made by a group of women in Ghana who literally crack open the nuts, cook them, and grind them into a paste in a centuries old process. Traditionally the paste is formed into balls and carried in hand made baskets.

Organic Essence Shea butter is ethically sourced and supports 600 women in Ghana with fair trade wages. If a fraction of body care companies were this responsible and green, it would have a huge impact on the earth and its inhabitants. Organic Essence is setting a wonderful example and by supporting them we can encourage other companies to follow suit.

It is just a little spendy for my budget (though ridiculously cheap when you consider what goes into it), so I've been wondering how I'm going to continue my habit. I recently spotted it on LuckyVitamin.com at a pretty big discount, so I will be using this all winter long. A little goes a long way, so even if you pay full price, I think it's still a great value. Their lip balm is also fantastic, so check that out too.

I read about the grueling process they go through to make the shea butter. It's good to see that some companies are trying to support those hardworking women. I agree, I think it's worth a few extra dollars to support responsible businesses that set good examples.

I agree! We're lucky to have access to it, really. Why buy body care that's bad for you when you can get something like this, right? Especially when it's such better quality.

I saw your post and not many of the women who produce these excellent products get proceeds or even acknowledgment of their talents. I know of another company www.sheayeleen.org who is very socially conscience of the work that goes into producing Shea Butter products and continues to give back to those African communities in fostering fair trade.

Kudos to you for publicizing this info.

Wow! That is a lot for such a little jar. I've been using the Body Butter from The Body Shop and I love it. Sometimes, when I'm out and can't get to the store right away, I try something else. But every time I do, I never like it. The body butter seems to work the best in moisturizing my skin. I prefer the creamy version, not the hard, paste consistency that shea butter usually comes in.

I would try the creamy version of this brand, but none of the scents appeal to me and I don't particularly like the nutty smell of the original. Maybe they'll venture into using other scents

Hi Gemini Wisdom--you would probably consider this consistency more pastey, but it's not hard (to me). The vanilla orange is an almost heady smell for me, the kind that makes you close your eyes and smile. Vanilla is just really soothing for me. I'm excited to try the other flavors but I'm pretty stuck on the vanilla orange for now. Thanks for stopping by!
