Worried about GMOs?  Or just want to learn more about them?  Watch this film, now available on iTunes.  Have you seen the photos of the rats fed gmo corn that are full of tumors?  What will happen to us?  There is an urgency to this, we have to get gmos out of our food.  I know I'm singing to the choir, but you can watch it with those who aren't yet in the know.

The FRESH ENERGY Cookbook

I've been sitting on this for a long time.  Natalia Rose is one of the most enlightened nutritionists/food and healthy lifestyle-thinkers out there and I wanted to do her cookbook, THE FRESH ENERGY COOKBOOK, co-authored with Chef Doris Choi, justice.  I've decided I can't do it justice--it's that good.

It's a brand new year and I know a lot of us are looking for ways to spice up our healthy living repertoire.  Well here you go, an excellent cookbook and resource book that will help you to achieve clean eating and more energy.

I LOVE this book.  It's simple, straighforward, and all the recipes I've tried are delicious.  It's full of glossy photos (a must, I think for any cookbook), uncomplicated recipes, and some good advice on how to optimize your food intake for maximum pleasure and health benefits.  Natalia's approach to health is a common sense, sort of back-to-basics approach that resonates on a deep level.  I've had success with her method and would strongly recommend any of her books, but this, it's a must-have cookbook.  If I could only have one, it would be this.

The focus is on nutrient dense, easy to digest, colorful yummy real foods.  Absent are grains, faux meat alternatives, and soy.  These recipes are not intimidating and they don't require hours of preparation or hard to find ingredients.  They are creative though, and inspiring, and cause you to look at food in a new way.

The cauliflower pizza crust is yummy, and a great alternative to gluten free crusts.  Salads are hearty and filling, and the 150 recipes will give you plenty to work with.   Fresh juices, salads, entrees, snacks, and desserts offer plenty of options for optimal, life affirming meals.  Find it HERE

Companies that side with Monsanto vs. the Good Guys

You might be surprised to learn who is backing Monsanto in trying to stop the 522 initiative to label GMOs.  A lot of companies supporting Monsanto are no surprise, Pepsi, Coke, Clorox--companies we know have zero interest in our health.  But it's the ones that we thought were looking out for us that are so disappointing.  The ones that sell organic food and promote health.  Companies we trusted.  Shame on them!  No more Lara Bars for us.  No more Alexia (love their organic french fries), no more Burts Bees, Santa Cruz Organic, and Horizon.  Moms buy this stuff for their families thinking they are making healthy choices, and it's a betrayal that these same companies don't even want us to know what's in our food.  Read more HERE and HERE.

On a positive note, look who's supporting 522:  Brad's Raw, Clif, Amy's, Annie's,  Coconut Bliss, Theo, Barleans, Tony's Coffee, Patagonia, and MORE.   This totally strengthens my loyalty to these brands and I'm grateful they're getting behind this.  If you're in Washington, please vote YES on 522.

Stop Monsanto Protection Act

In my inbox today, this from the OCA:

URGENT: House Passes Monsanto Protection Act. Ask Your Senators to Stop It!

On Friday, September 20, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the Continuing Resolution (H.J.RES.59), a bill to keep the government running through December 15. The bill will force a showdown with the Senate because it includes a provision to defund the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.

But the Continuing Resolution is controversial for another reason. It extends the Monsanto Protection Act, officially referred to as the Farmers Assurance Provision, a law that gives biotech firms immunity from federal prosecution for illegally growing GMO crops.
Please call your Senators today and ask them to pass a clean version of the Continuing Resolution, one that doesn’t extend the Monsanto Protection Act.
You can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected with your Senator. Or find individual senators’ phone numbers here.
You can say:
“I’m calling to ask the Senator to oppose the Farmers Assurance Provision, sometimes referred to as the Monsanto Protection Act, and to vote no on any bill, including the Continuing Resolution, which includes the provision.”
Background
The Monsanto Protection Act was first passed in March, when it was quietly and without debate slipped into the earlier version of the Continuing Resolution, a bill to fund the government through September 30. As Politico reporter David Rogers explained in his Monsanto Protection Act exposé, “Big Agriculture Flexes its Muscle,” the Monsanto-friendly rider was never voted on. Rogers, a seasoned political reporter, described how the Monsanto Protection Act became law “with little or no floor debate and in a period of turmoil.”

The backroom deal that made the Monsanto Protection Act law generated a public backlash. It was the subject of a Daily Show episode. And it helped spawn a worldwide March against Monsanto, reported on by the New York Times.

Because the Senate never voted on the Monsanto Protection Act, we don’t know where all of the senators stand on the issue. But here’s what we do know:
•    Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) conspired with Monsanto lobbyists to write the law.
•    Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), chair of the full Senate Appropriations Committee, publicly apologized for letting the Monsanto Protection Act slip through. But, she said, she had a responsibility to avoid a government shutdown.
•    Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), tried for a vote to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act during the Senate Farm Bill debate.
•    Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) blocked Merkley’s amendment.
•    Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D- Mich.) promised Merkley that the amendment wouldn’t be renewed without a vote.
Please call your senators today. Ask them to reject extending the Monsanto Protection Act and vote no on the Continuing Resolution unless this blatant giveaway to the biotech industry is removed.  Thank you!

Pacific Kale: I am Obsessed!

Pacific Kale just got a new look and it gives me an excuse to talk about them.  I'm totally obsessed with these kale chips!  The Glacier Peak especially, but any of them really.  Kale Chips are my favorite snack, I can't get enough.  I make my own, but can never put any aside, between myself and my son, the second they're ready, they are gone--consumed as fast as I can make them.

Buying them packaged accomplishes what I might be able to do on my own if I had any self control.  The concept of having a ready made leafy green snack that is this delicious---it's Fabulous!  Raw greens, but any time we want them, right out of the pantry (or backpack), ready to eat.  The trouble is they're too good and it's an expensive habit.  But when you consider the health benefits, I think it's worth it.  And when I'd rather have this than pretty much any other snack including chocolate chip cookies or chip-chips, etc, I'd say that's pretty great.   I'm particularly fond of Pacific Kale because they don't over-flavor their chips.  They are melt-in-your-mouth light and crispy and subtle, and....well they are just perfect.

Anyway, they've gone from bags to boxes (presumably to keep the leaves in tact) and they are even easier to scarf down---uh--munch on.  If you haven't tried them already, you must.  Find them HERE

New for Summer: Sierra Trail Mix CLIF BAR

Need some easy access energy for your summer hikes and travels?  Clif Bar has come out with a new flavor, Sierra Trail Mix.  It's 70% organic, gmo free and contains sustainably sourced cocoa from farms certified by the Rainforest Alliance.  I'd like to see that USDA Certified Organic seal on Clif Bars as well, it looks like they might be moving in that direction.  Seirra Trail Mix, as the name implies, contains trail mix ingredients like raisins, peanuts and chocolate.  It has a little bit of salty-sweet going on and is super kid friendly.  My son goes bananas for Clif Bars of any kind, and boy do they come in handy when you are caught out too long without a snack.  Pulling one of these out of my bag when things start to go cranky can turn the whole day around.  Find them HERE.

JUSTIN'S NUT BUTTER: Chocolate Hazelnut

Every year around Valentine's Day, I talk about chocolate.  And it's often heart shaped or something that comes in pink or red packaging.  This year, it's not.  It's chocolate, and it's wonderful, but it's not in a colorful wrapper.  It's Justin's Nut Butter, in Hazelnut (which is a little bit heart shaped now that I think of it) and it's so good that's what I'm recommending this year for a Valentine's Day treat.

It comes in a jar, like other nut butters, but what I really love is that it also comes in packets.  And these packets help you to not knock off a half a jar in one sitting, and they go everywhere with you.  In the gym bag, in your backpack, in your suitcase, and even on the plane (they're under 3.4 oz and you have to count them as part of your liquid allotment, but it works great for in-flight snacking).

It's a little bit too delicious, be warned.  That's why the packets are such a great idea, you can keep better track of how much you eat, and they are just the right amount to calm a hungry stomach, or stabilize blood sugar when you lose track of time and you need a pick me up away from your healthy kitchen.

The Hazelnut Butter is wonderful, and I thought that one would be my favorite, but I think the Almond Butter is just as good.  They both have a grainy salty sweet thing going on that is irresistible and crazy good.  The only thing that would make this better is a full on organic certification (though they do use some organic ingredients).

This year for Valentine's Day, here's something different to try, either for gifts (would be perfect to slip inside a Valentine) or treat yourself.  If you want to dress up the label, take a red sharpie and draw a heart around the hazelnut, why not?  Find it on HERE  on Amazon, or in your local stores like REI and your co-op.

Prop 37 Backlash

As shocked and upset as I was to see the prop 37 fail, I do find it heartening that it exposed the dirty dealings of certain food companies to deceive their customers.  All those millions spent to pull the  wool over consumers' eyes has only added fuel to the fire and hopefully will serve to speed the process of gmo labeling.

For the last ten years these underhanded companies have been getting away with murder--quite literally in my opinion--by selling food products containing gmos.  Companies I once trusted, like KNUDSEN, KASHI, HORIZON ORGANIC, SILK, ODWALLA, ALEXIA, CASCADIAN FARMS, LARABAR--how could they object to labeling??  Because they are owned by food giants who would then have to label their toxic food.  If you need a refresher on why gmos are tremendously dangerous, take a look at THIS.

Pacific Northwest Organic Kale Chips

Do you love Kale chips?  I've yet to meet anyone who didn't like them, including people who don't like "healthy food."  Even people who wouldn't go near kale, seem to love it in this form, and that includes children.  Kale chips are so satisfying, they don't make you feel full and gross the way regular chips do, and since they are cooked at very low heat, they are still raw and loaded with nutrients.

Pacific Northwest Kale Chips are the latest I've tried and they are fabulous.  One thing I noticed right away when opening the bag is how green they are.  They are much greener than other kale chips I've had, they're really pretty.  I don't know if it's the lemon juice, but it's a lovely presentation.  They come in three flavors, Stumptown Original--made with hazelnuts and has kick from cayenne pepper, Glacier Peak Greens--containing cilantro which pairs fabulously with the kale and also a little spicy with jalapeno peppers, and Cheezy Crunch--not spicy, made with cashews and probably my favorite, though anything with cilantro is right up there.  The best thing about these, besides how awesome they taste, is that they are completely organic.  They're also raw, gluten free, grain free, vegan and very low in calories.   How great to have a snack like this on hand!  If you're in a hurry, just pop one in your bag.  Because of their light weight, they are perfect for backpacking and hiking too.

Though they might get a little smashed, I think they are fantastic for travel.  In fact, I'm about to head over to their website to order a case for an upcoming trip.  Yes, they are a little spendy, but how much would you pay for a big healthy organic salad at the airport, for instance?  Or at your hotel?  First of all, it's almost impossible to find organic food on the go, and certainly at the airport, but if you do find it at your destination, you will pay.  Having snacks like these in hand is my insurance for being away from our healthy kitchen, and it's worth it.

Organic greens are a staple and necessity in our family diet, and I personally feel like I can barely live without them, I need greens daily.  This is a great way to make sure you will get your greens, and in one of the most delicious ways possible, it's a big bowl of organic kale, dehydrated to fit into a small bag, how fantastic.  They are even on sale right now, so it's the perfect time to try them out, and if you need a post-holiday gift for the healthy foodie in your life, these would be perfect--oh how I wish someone would give me stuff like this!  Also, what a perfect way to start the new year off on the right foot.  Find them HERE.

The ONE Resolution I Wish Everyone Would Make

I say it every year, there is one resolution I wish everyone would make, and I believe this would change the world: GO ORGANIC.  Just buy organic food, that's all.  This seems so simple and so intuitive to me that I cannot believe there is still the option--do you want your food with or without poison?  By purchasing organic food you are making a statement, you are voting, and you are insuring the most precious thing you have, your health and that of your family.  What is more important than that?

Not only is buying organic food benefiting you, it's doing something positive and necessary for the whole planet, people, and animals that live here.  Buying organic is protecting the farmers who often are forced to handle food laden with dangerous chemicals and suffer tremendous health consequences.  It's protecting our rivers, our oceans, our air quality.  It's voting against dangerous GMOs--when you buy organic, you buy GMO free.

"We can't afford it," is the excuse I hear most for why people don't buy organic.  This makes me a little crazy because the folks I hear this most from are people with bank accounts that I can only aspire to.  If I had to move my family into a one room efficiency apartment to be able to buy organic, I would, that's how important I think it is.  Of course, that is not necessary because organic food does Not cost that much more than conventional food and in some cases it's the same and even cheaper.  You just have to shop smart.  You buy what is in season, you buy in bulk, you buy local. Also, I firmly believe that you either pay now, or pay later in the form of hefty hospital bills and poor health.  You can't afford Not to buy organic.

Eating healthy is Not expensive!  There is nothing cheaper than beans and rice.  Throw in a little kale (which you can grow on a balcony year round for pennies) and you have yourself a hearty stick-to-your-ribs meal on the cheap.  I'm on a tight budget myself and food is still the most important thing I spend money on.  When I was a student living on a shoe string, I still ate organic--nothing fancy, but healthy organic food like broccoli, salad, sweet potatoes, etc.  Anyone still thinking it's too expensive WATCH THIS.

The only reason not to eat organic is because it's not available.  I've been there before, living in a region where it was really hard to find.  If you are in this position, demand it.  Ask your grocer to carry it.  Be proactive, grow it, make it a priority.  For the last six years, I have eaten all organic food at home.  I have a major thing for Thai food and I know my take out is not organic, but as more and more people ask for it, it will become more and more available.

You can still eat whatever you want--cookies and junk food even (though I don't recommend this), just make it organic and you are quantum leaps ahead. We are swimming in chemicals that are killing us and our planet.  If that sounds extreme, just have a look at the EWG and the ORGANIC CONSUMERS ASSOCIATION to get your passion ignited.  I believe that going organic is possibly the easiest and most powerful change people can make and it can start today.

I may be singing to the choir posting this here, but if anyone is reading this that has not made the switch, I hope you will consider it.  Good health to all in 2013!

Healthy Foods for Travel

One of the biggest challenges while traveling is finding healthy food to eat.  At home I insist on an organic diet packed with fresh vegetables and lots of organic greens.  It's super hard to find organic food on the go.  It's likely you'll encounter GMOs, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals and undesirable ingredients.  A great strategy is to make sure you have some healthy snacks with you so you don't get overly hungry and eat something you'd rather not, and be sure to load up on antioxidants so that when you do encounter that stuff, your body will have extra ammo to deal with it.  If you are heading out for the holidays, having healthy food on hand will save you money, you'll feel better, and you might avoid meltdowns from little ones.

Here are some great foods for travel:

Navitas Naturals CACAO GOJI SUPERFOOD Power Snacks.  Made with goji berries, cacao, maca, and chia seeds, these little square bites taste good and will provide energy and sustenance on the go.  They are completely organic, vegan, and portable.  Perfect for on the plane or in the car, and great for kids because they are sweet.  But not too sweet!  They're also sustainably sourced and like everything from Navitas, the best of the best.  This is one company I trust for quality and everything I've ever had by them has been excellent.

Two more Navitas picks for travel:  Wheatgrass powder and Coconut Water Powder--yes you read that right.  When we travel it's common to become dehydrated, especially on the plane.  Coconut is packed with electrolytes and will get you hydrated in a hurry, just add a tablespoon to water.  It's freeze dried, isn't that genius?  Coconut water is one of my favorite things on earth and to be able to have it in my backpack is amazing to me.  Often when you eat in restaurants and on the go, you consume a lot more salt than you would at home.  Coconut water is also great for getting rid of that puffiness your body can get from too much salt.  It can also be used at home in smoothies or juice--perfect for post holiday excess.

Wheatgrass is a super quick way to get chlorophyll in your system.  Sometimes it's hard (or impossible) to find organic greens on the go.  With Navitas Naturals Wheat Grass, you can have greens with you at all times.  Just a tiny little bit-1/4 tsp is equal to a shot that you'd get a the co-op.  It weighs next to nothing and can easily go into your luggage.  Wheat grass is detoxifying, energizing, and packed with nutrients.  If you are someone that is used to having green drinks every day at home, this is perfect.  Navitas has a huge selection of superfoods that are ideal for travel.  It's condensed nutrition that you're after and they have all sorts of things that fit the bill, and if you're ambitious enough to make your own energy bars and whatnot, they have premium ingredients.

If you're not a fan of straight wheat grass (though the freeze dried is much more mild than getting it fresh), another great option are Green Vibrance packets which contain organic greens, herbs and probiotics.  Both options are wonderful back up for being away from your juicer and while I don't think they are the same in nutrition value (some might argue they are even better) as fresh green juice, I feel it's crucial to have a daily dose of greens.  I like the taste and they are available for subscribe and save prices on Amazon and discounted at Vitacost.

Organic Almonds and other nuts and seeds.  Trader Joes makes this very easy with their affordable nuts and dried fruit, you can make your own trail mix or buy theirs that come in little individual packets.  If you don't have access to TJs, just make your own trailmix.  My favorite nuts are Macadamias and Walnuts.  Your local co-op is also a great source for trail mixes and nuts and seeds in bulk.

Organic Apples and Lemons.  I'd say bananas too, which are nature's ultimate power bar, but they get smashed so easily.  Apples are fairly portable and make for a refreshing and teeth and breath freshening snack on the go.  Lemons are detoxifying and are wonderful to have on hand to squeeze into hot water or on salads.

Justin's Nut ButterBe warned, this stuff is ridiculously addictive, however the individual packets make self control a little easier. Eat it right out of the packet or with celery sticks or crackers.

Water Bottle.  Staying hydrated is key, and having your own bottle with you will make that easier.  I love Camelbak's Groove water bottle with the built in charcoal filters.  This allows you to get water from any tap without the yucky taste that often comes with that.  You save money and help the earth by not contributing to the ghastly amount of water bottles floating around in the ocean and landfills.  This bottle does not get the real nasties out, the ones that can make you sick, but if you are going to a destination with questionable water, they make a bottle for that too, the All Clear

Oat Meal.  This is easy.  There are so many good organic hot cereals on the market that come in little packets that you can just throw in your suitcase and prepare right in the hotel room or even on the plane.  They're satisfying, stick to your ribs, and are kid friendly.  I like the Trader Joes instant cinnamon oatmeal, its organic, kid friendly, and tastes great.

Kale Chips.  While they can get a little smashed, they are delicious and full of good nutrition.  Alive & Radiant's kale chips seem to hold up well because it's the whole leaf that is dehydrated, so they stay in one piece a little better.  The Dijon is sooo good and doesn't leave you with garlic breath (important when you're on the go and interacting with lots of people!).  They're a little too good, I could live on these things.  If you want a sweet kale chip, their Chokalet Kale Chips are fabulous and will definitely hold up great for traveling.

Tea.  I always bring my own teas, a variety, because I don't want the non-organic teas and coffee found in hotel rooms.  Yogi teas are among my favorite and this year I discovered the new Energy teas which are wonderfully aromatic and delicious.  It really is like aromatherapy, there is just something so soothing about a hot cup of tea.  Not all of their teas are certified organic, but use organic ingredients.  The Vanilla Spice is great for this time of year.

Chocolate and Kale?? YES!!

Two of my favorite things, chocolate and kale.....yet, somehow the thought of combining the two didn't sound like a great idea to me.  Boy was I wrong.  Holy Cow!  Alive & Radiant's Organic CHOCKALET CHIP Kale Krunch is Amazing.  I just tried these and I am on my way over to their website to buy more right now.  How have I never known about these before?  This is perfect for when you are craving chocolate but still want to eat healthy.

A whole bag only has just over 300 calories but it's filled with nutrition.  Perfect for travel (especially on the plane) and to get you through the holidays.  Seriously, you need these for the holidays.  When everyone else is consuming unhealthy junk food, you will have a bag of this with you for amunition against temptation, and you will feel energetic and great after eating this instead of sugar cookies.   Find them HERE

EPA's Dioxin Reassessment Suppressed by Food Giants

Did you know that one serving of a non organic animal product can exceed your daily intake of dioxin?  As if there should be any allowable amount as it's one of the most toxic substances on the planet.  Up 10% in 2010, Dioxin pollution is a man made problem and we are all impacted, mostly through food.  The FDA says, "Although dioxins are environmental contaminants, most dioxin exposure occurs through the diet, with over 95% coming through dietary intake of animal fats."

As the EPA gears up to release part of a 26 year long risk assessment study, corporate food lobbyists are attempting to avoid responsibility by suppressing the information so they don't have to comply with food safety regulations. Check out this important video for a quick look at how serious this problem has become.  Head over to the OCA website to send an email declaring that we have a right to know what is in our food and encouraging the EPA to take action (it's a 10 second form).

JUST LABEL IT! Video Message to FDA

Consumer based organization, JUST LABEL IT, releases new video by FOOD, INC. Filmaker, Robert Kenner as part of their Just Label It campaign to get some regulation from the FDA enforcing the labeling of GMO foods.  “Labels Matter captures my conviction that consumers have the right to know what is in their food,” says Kenner.  This is such a pressing matter, and already over a half a million consumers have asked for labeling.  You can view the video HERE and also sign a petition to the FDA.  Who doesn't want to know what's in their food, especially when it's genetically modified?!

The One Resolution I Wish Everyone Would Make

I say it every year, the one resolution I wish everyone would make is to go organic.  This is a step that doesn't just enhance your own life, but changes the quality of life for your community and your planet.  Harsh farming has damaged our soil which is much more valuable than gold.  Our crops suffer and the folks working the farms are exposed to carcinogens and pay the price.  Pesticides are linked to cancer and more maladies than I can count.

Outlawed in other companies, GMOs are gaining ground and the only way to know you are not getting frankenfood is to look for that organic seal.  GMOs are implicated in health issues, further soil erosion, and some think waning of our bee populations.

Organic food can cost more, but not always, especially if you buy seasonally.  Organic farms are not subsidized and farming is more labor intensive and involved.  I have the highest respect for organic farmers and think they should be at the very top of our social status stratosphere, way above doctors and lawyers.  They are creating what will go in our bodies and create us--literally!  We have not been recognizing or paying the actual cost of quality food.  Factor in health care costs in the long term, organic food is cheap.

If I had to move to an efficiency apartment to afford organic food, I would, that's how important it is to me.  Food without the poison--seriously.  It never ceases to amaze me this is still a choice.  For those living in areas where organic food is hard or impossible to find, consider growing it or forming a community co-op.   We are what we eat, on a cellular level, is there anything more important for your heath than to make sure that food is pure?

Meal Ideas for Camping

Need some ideas for what to take camping for meal time?  Here are some kid friendly ideas ranging from easy to a little more complicated, all are relatively healthy and vegan).  Always buy organic and local when possible.

Veggie dogs and veggie burgers--easy, easy, easy!

Oatmeal--perfect for breakfast when it's chilly, just add boiling water and you're done.

Pancakes (bring a mix and cast iron griddle, you can get vegan pancake mix right at the co-op in the bulk section)

Bars for kids--some handy organic bars are great for when you've ventured away from camp and you hear those words, "mama, I'm hungry," even though you ate just an hour ago.

Fruit--bananas are nature's power bars and they come in their own wrappers.  I also love watermelon during the summer, it's refreshing and hydrating and how could you go camping without it?

Chia makes a great little raw porridge and is hydrating and energizing and easy to pack.  Ideal for backpackers, but super nutritious and wonderful for all.

Organic Corn Chips and Salsa are always nice for those moments when you need something to eat Right Now.  Throw in some avocado and you have a mini meal.  Add hot black beans and you have a hearty meal that will infuse the camp with that home-cooking fragrance.

Hummus and Tabouleh with Pita Chips.  Tabouleh is particularly refreshing in the Summer and when made with quinoa is a nutrition packed dish.  I load mine with tons of parsley, mint and cucumber.

Smores.  That's the classic camp dessert and I never really liked them.  That is until I tried them as an adult, with quality organic dark chocolate and graham crackers (I love the Health Valley organic Amaranth graham crackers) and vegan marshmallows.  Still not my favorite thing in the world, but the kids love them and there's something sweet about tradition.

The One Resolution I Wish Everyone Would Make

Okay I know I've posted a lot about New Year's Resolutions.  I just love them, I love making lists and goals and I guess I'm just nerdy that way.  I get excited that we all have this wonderful opportunity to set forth intention and go after our goals with a shiny new year in hand.  The last thing I shall say about this is that there is one resolution I wish everyone would make, and I believe this would change the world.

GO ORGANIC.

Non GMO Day Today and all Month

October is now National Non GMO month and today is Non GMO day. With the alarming spread of genetically modified foods and seeds, concerned retailers got together to create awareness of this crucial issue.

GMOs are created in a laboratory by combining genes from different plants, animals, viruses, bacteria and who knows what.   They are designed to tolerate heavy application of herbicides and pesticides or create their own. Have you heard of Roundup?  This is Monsanto's star pesticide, and the gmo plants withstand heavy doses of this very dangerous pesticide.  Roundup is known to  cause cell disruption even in very low amounts leading to a host of serious health risks.  You can find detailed studies with a quick google search and the chilling fact is that the dangers of Roundup have been known for years.

Monsanto is also responsible for engineering Terminator Seeds.  Seeds that produce plants with no viable seeds!  So you have to go back to them to get more seeds, the plants can't reproduce.  Destroying our food supply is not smart.  Animals won't eat these plants. Other countries don't allow GMOs.  It seems all common sense and reason goes out the window in the US where money is concerned.

For me, this is beyond bizarre.  That we are even having this discussion--it's madness.  The GMO issue reminds me of cartoons or comics I saw as a kid.  There was the mad scientist who had come up with a crazy way to control the masses or a major resource to Rule The World.  Luckily, Spiderman or some other benevolent force would foil the plan and save the day.  Well, the mad scientist is real and it's Monsanto, and there's no Spiderman to save the day.   The whole thing is surreal.

Approximately 80% of processed foods in American grocery stores contain GMOs.  And you don't even know it because they are not required to label their food.  This is yet another reason to buy ORGANIC FOODS ONLY.

Labeling GMO foods was in the works, but Mosanto, armed with millions in lobbying funds is not in favor of this.  Of course not, at least a few people would be turned off by frankenfood if they knew what they were eating.  The FDA recently stated that GMO foods do not need to be labeled with disclosure.

The Non-GMOP roject has come up with a new labeling system stating that the product is GMO free, with the "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal.  From what I understand, the FDA also opposed the notion of declaring foods GMO free, so I'm not sure how this will pan out.  Whole Foods Market is in the process of having their 365 brand certified by the Non-GMO Project, so maybe they have found a way around the FDA who clearly is not serving the interest of the people.

So far, only 300 retailers and co-ops are participating in the Non-GMO Project.  This seems like a low number to me, but I suspect by next year that number will be much bigger.  Corinne Shindelar, Independent Natural Food Retailers Assoc. CEO says, "We have a responsibility to consumers to ensure the integrity of our food system, and among shoppers who value safe, healthy food, there is a strong desire to avoid GMOs.  Non-GMO month is a fantastic opportunity to give people the information and non-GMO choices they are looking for."

FRESH The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook by Sergei and Valya Boutenko

You better have some free time when you pick up this book, because it's hard to put it down. Just like their mother, Victoria Boutenko, Sergei and Valya have a way with words. Both talk about their journey to raw foods, and tell the story of how they were able to reverse life threatening medical problem and go on to thrive. They discuss challenges like how to eat raw while traveling, how to get children interested, and maintain a healthy diet in a world where that's not always so easy.

The Boutenkos are so far ahead of their time in nutritional wisdom, but draw from the oldest and most simple, instinctive knowledge. Once they point to it, it's as plain as day and you wonder, how did we ever get so far away from this?

The first quarter of the book is full of insight and information. The rest is comprised of recipes that are accessible and loosely written as to encourage experimentation. At one point they talk about how odd it is that we even need recipes with measurements to consume raw foods. How is it we are the only species who don't know instinctively how and what to eat?

This book is thought provoking and filled with great ideas for yummy food. There are some beautiful photos, but not that many. Normally I like my cookbooks to have a photo accompanying each recipe, but this book is so rich that it didn't bother me. Maybe the Boutenkos will one day do a hardcover traditional photo laden (un)cookbook? I look forward to more from this knowledgeable, inspiring family!
